Sexy MIT Engineers Freshman fall I decided to join a sport. I had never played sports in my life. My family wasn’t at all “sportsy or outdoorsy”. But on a whim, I emailed the womens ultimate frisbee team and showed up to practice one day. It was such a struggle. I could not throw a single disc. I could barely catch a single disc. I was exhausted halfway through a point. Two weeks later, I was at my first ever ultimate frisbee tournament. I played quite terribly. If I just remembered which way the field was going and which way we were forcing the other team to throw, that was enough of an accomplishment. But! I learned so much on the sidelines from the veteran players! How to play defense by being on the open side of my player. How to cheer very loudly on the sidelines. I remember the only time I caught a disc was in the end zone, scoring my first point ever. Memories from Stonehills Tournament Fall 2012 Slowly through the season I began understanding the game more and more. But I still needed to work on: throwing, catching, offense, defense, speed…pretty much everything. Then by IAP, throwing myself into all this sprinting caught up with me in the form of shin splints. I asked around for advice and got plenty: Stretch, strengthen, ice. But I never diligently followed it. I just played through and did fine more or less…We even flew to Texas for a spring break tournament! sMITe Spring 2013 My shin splints evolved into stress fractures just in time for the freshman spring season to finish. End of freshmen year I also had to make a decision: theatre or ultimate? It had become extremely difficult to do both. I chose theatre. But then the summer after freshmen year, I dreamt at night about catching discs. I missed exercise and how accomplished it made me feel. Sophomore year, I came back ready and committed. Yet even then, I had to take a break from the womens ultimate team whenever other commitments swallowed too much time. But I was always welcomed back with open arms. Sophomore spring season, I ran into the same problem. And then, playing on a club team all last summer meant I could barely run without shooting pain by the time this fall semester started. Clearly something needed to change. This summer, being away from MIT gave me distance from which to reflect. I realized that more than just getting an education here, it was equally important to build good habits that will help me in the long run even if there’s no immediate incentive. One of GEL’s capabilities of effective leadership is self-awareness and self-improvement. And so, another goal for this semester is to work on three good habits essential to my happiness: 1. Sleep at least 7 hours a night. 2. Eat breakfast every day. 3. Exercise at least 7 hours every week. 4. Take at least one day off every week. Being caught up in the whirlwind of MIT makes the most mundane tasks into mountains to conquer. The first one: I love sleeping. And dreaming. I can’t function with less than 6 hours. The second: I exist in the mornings for breakfast. I stocked up at Costco. The third: I met with our strength and conditioning coach to come up with a strengthening plan. It includes lifting, endurance workouts, and stretching/foam rolling. Now I have to stick to it. Trying to build a habit of exercising everyday has been difficult. It can be so easy to be swamped by work. But I realize that exercising, being outside, releasing endorphins, makes me happy. Happy Neerja work. And so, the last rule helps break out of that stress. Every weekend, I take at least one day off. Yesterday, I went on a bike ride and ended up at Boston College about 30 minutes away. (On another note, my bike lock got stuck. I had to ask the police for help, and then barely made it back to MIT in time for rehearsals. Yay adventure!) I love playing with sMITe, the womens club ultimate team at MIT. I love yelling and cheering on the sidelines just as much as playing a point. I feel vested in my team members’ amazing plays and scores as if I was on the field. *Sigh!* 3 Kristens breathtaking skies. Lisa Liu is my ultimate inspiration. She even promised to bake me a cookie for every time I work on strengthening my shins. I love the positivity on our team. If someone screws up a play or drops a disc, we all understand and encourage them to shake it off. If someone new wants to join, we’re all supportive and willing to teach. I especially appreciate the time and guidance our coaches offer. Having feedback makes it so much easier to improve. Our rookies are terrifying in the cup! Im the happiest when Im playing outside away from school, psets, long to-do lists. Ive realized better late than never how important sports are. My favorite part of playing ultimate is incremental improvement. I could definitely see the difference at our last tournament. I remember my first ever successful layout during the first point. I could stay on point after point without needing a break. I felt faster and much better at offense and defense. When I asked what can I improve on, my coach said now it was really just skill-building: catching, throwing, strength, speed. I’m determined to become a better player. Before we can truly respect others you must like and respect yourselves. If we feel we are worthless, dumb, a terrible employee, too this or too that, we will often treat ourselves badly. We will beat ourselves up in our own mind. Then when we meet another person we usually fall in to one of two categories; the â€Å"I am not worthy† as we put our significant other on a pedestal or the â€Å"there must be something wrong with this person if they like me. † At first when we are in the beginning stages of the relationship, we are on cloud nine, all is right in the world and nothing else matters. The beginning stage can last a while and when we are in it we do not think about respect, we are consumed by passion. Over time, the beginning stage fades and if you do not respect or like yourself, the questioning and insecurity start to damage the relationship. When we love and respect ourselves we treat others with respect and we receive the same amount of respect in return. When you really take a moment to think about treating other individuals with respect, it can solve so many issues. When we respect another person, we can begin to trust them to handle the truth in the long run so you should always be honest, trust their judgment in all aspects of life and you should and will demand that other people treat you with the same amount of respect in which you have treated that person or people with. You should always let other people such as, your boss or a fellow coworker know when you are running late and why you are running late, have made a mistake or think that you may have made a mistake , violated an agreement or just need time to be alone and collect your thoughts. When you are showing your respect to someone you should always listen to what they have to say and don’t blame them for your issues, or doubt their opinion on something you have asked for their opinion on. So many relationship, co-worker, and leadership challenges would be so much easier to deal with if you would just take a moment to think about the respect we have for other people and demonstrate that in our actions. This respect goes beyond the workplace, primary relationships, and acquaintances. It extends to the manner in which you’re going to be treated, depending on how you’re treating other people. Respecting time that someone has have set aside for you and giving that other person room for them to complete their tasks. If you respect every person you’re involved with, whether it be at your workplace, home, or just simply socializing at an event. That person will treat you with the same amount of respect, as you have treated them with. The same rules apply when you are at your place of work, communication, honesty and consideration are given out of respect and co-workers relationships can flow a whole lot more smoothly. In my experience when my superior in my workplace is speaking with me, and that person treats me with respect and I treat that person with respect then things work a whole lot more smoothly and everyone is happy. When any living person ignores agreements, pushes boundaries and just in general acts with disrespect towards another person, it is hard and challenging to all involved. When you withhold the truth, Manipulate, or Lie, you might as well be saying I don’t respect that person whether they are in a position of leadership or otherwise. They might think and feel that you can’t handle the truth. That person might also think you do not trust them to get their tasks accomplished and that you don’t trust that they will stand by you through the challenges in any given situation. The challenge with this is that when you don’t live up to the expectations you have promised to abide by, you could become angry and blame that other individual for not being what you might have thought they were. Looking at relationships between co-workers I have witnessed, including my own, the most successful were undeniably people who held each other with great respect. This is as true of business partnerships as well as personal relationships and even parents with their child or children. This is not to say they don’t fight or face challenges in relationships but rather these relationships have a grounded base of respect to help get through the challenges that they might encounter together. Historical cost is the system of accounting that bases asset values and expenses on the actual prices paid, rather than on market valuations. It is allows for consistency and comparability. Goodwill arising on the acquisition of controlled entities is treated as an asset of the controlled entity. It is believed that if all the above combinations had taken place at the beginning of the year, the estimated profit for the group may have been $322. 3 million and the estimated revenue may have been $4,222. 3 million (See Appendix 5a. ). The transition to the Australian equivalents to International Financial Reporting Statements (AIFRS), in order to ensure that the financial report, financial statement and notes meet the requirements of the AIFRS, the 2005 annual financial report is the first year that has been prepared on the basis of AIFRS and the auditor has also restated the 2004 annual financial report in order to be able to make comparisons with the current year to evaluate the change (See Appendix 5b. ). One area of concern is that of the use of estimates. In order to prepare financial statements, company’s management is required work with estimates and make assumptions for amounts of assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and disclosures. Questionable accounting figures With a glance at the balance sheets of CCL in 2004 and 2005, in the category of non-current asset, It was found that the investment in bottler’s agreements are 3278. 3 million in 2003, 1423. 6 million in 2004 and 1506. 4 million in 2005 respectively. Because AASB 138 that comes into force in 2005, companies generally will not be allowed to revalue intangible assets upwards. This is a problem for Coca-Cola Amatil as it would be forced to revert to the assets fair value, reducing it by $1. 9 billion. Another questionable problem is that according to CCA’s financial statements, investments in bottler’s agreements are deemed to have indefinite lives (see CCA 2005 annual report PDF pg. 88). But the truth is that there is a long and ongoing relationship between the Group and The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) and at 31 December 2005, there were thirteen agreements throughout the Group at varying stages of their, mainly, ten year terms. In some circumstances an intangible asset may be considered to have an indefinite useful life. The accounting standard defines an indefinite useful life as occurring where: ‘there is no foreseeable limit on the period over which the asset is expected to generate cash flows’. But obviously, they have foreseeable limit on the period when the agreements expire in 10 years. Where an asset is considered to have an indefinite life there is no requirement to amortize the asset. Consequently, the Debt to assets Ratio and the Equity Multiplier will be better off than that when the asset life is definite. 7. Possibility to UNDO Distortions in the Accounting Numbers CCL was trying to negotiate with the Federal government for concessions on the transition to IFRS, because the bottler’s agreement will not be completely viewed as an asset under AASB138 as CCL entity did prior 2005. As a result, around $1. 9 billion shear reduction occurred in the account in 2005. It is also controversial that CCL considers the bottler’s agreement as indefinite intangible asset based on the view that â€Å"no factor can be identified that would result in the agreements not being renewed at the end of their legal terms†, due to its well corporation with TCCC. However, those assumptions are suspicious. The useful life of intangible asset is defined in AASB 138 as â€Å"the period of time over which the asset is expected to be used by the entity†. Therefore, the investment in bottler’s agreements should be considered as a useful life of 10 years and be amortized over 10 year on a straight-line basis with nil residual value. CCA’s financial press Most of the recent financial press reports regarding Coca Cola Amatil have focused on the group’s projected financial year profit and the share price. The figures have mostly been accompanied by speculation surrounding CCA’s current marketing gambit with its introduction of the Coca Cola Company’s new product lines. In October 2005, a Packwire reports that CCA had profit in second half at A$152. 6 million. The report suggests that CCA was expecting to turnaround low earning in South Korea by increasing the volume by 4% in the third quarter. Months after a complaint was filed with the organization’s hotline the two men were terminated from their long-standing positions. There was an attempt of their part to communicate with the vice president of HR, but their efforts were not reciprocated. The two employees, one a sales center manager and the other HR manager, also claimed that they were discriminated against by Coca-Cola executives , who are white, not only because of their Asian ethnicity, but also since they were over 40 years old (Magin, 2009). Theses three cases prove that, even though there are programs and procedures put in place to avoid diversity issues, especially that of racial discrimination, this is an on-going problem within the Coca-Cola organization. In response to the allegations and requirements of the â€Å"Quota Cola† case’s settlement, Coke took a hard look at their diversity initiatives and made some significant changes. Some of the key features of focus include the following: 1. Become a Fortune 500 Quota Company: Among other Fortune 500 companies, Coke agreed to make a great effort in the hiring and promotional practices of as many non-white employees as possible and to serve as a model for other companies. 2. Responsibilities of the Board of Directors: The Board must be a representation of all racial classes. 3. An independent Task Force: Coke agreed to abdicate its responsibility to the shareholders by allowing an outside diversity body, termed A Seven Member Task Force, the purpose of which is to ensure that the right numbers of persons of color are hired, promoted, and contracted with according to the terms of the settlement. This outside body will have unprecedented power to force Coca Cola to hire persons of the right color at all levels of the company, without regard to years of service or other demonstrable qualifications (besides, of course, the color of their skin Review by Joint Experts: Coca Cola has voluntarily agreed to plaintiff demands that the company use mutually agreed-upon experts to review the companys personnel policies and to prepare a minority-oriented Joint Expert and Recommendation to the racial task force (see 3, above). 5. An independent Ombudsperson: Coca Cola is required to hire an allegedly independent ombudsperson (kind of an unofficial mediator), with approval of the minority special interests. This supposedly independent person will address internal reports of discrimination and retaliation and independently monitor the handling of complaints by Coca Colas personnel department. 6. Monitoring: The Task Force has the power to force Coca Cola to report the promotion and hiring of blacks and other non-whites within the company. These reports will go to the Board of Directors, among others.
